We tend to be pretty low-key when it comes to birthday celebrations nowadays – and this year was no different. However, Derek did want to go out for a fun, relaxing evening with our close friends and neighbors – Jim and Sarah Fisher. He decided that we’d try out a new place (new to us) in New Haven – The Cask Republic – for dinner and then move on to 116 Crown.
The Cask Republic is a upscale pub-style restaurant. The beer list is huge – with plenty of draught beers to choose from. Derek’s preferred beer is an IPA or other Pale Ale and the menu had a good selection. It was happy hour (4-7pm) when we arrived – so the specialty drinks were just $5! Awesome – I got an Undercurrent Martini (Malibu Rum, Blue Curacao, citrus vodka, & raspberry liquor, shaken with fresh squeezed lemon and lime and served up). Derek started off with a Blue Point IPA as Blue Point was the featured brewery.
For dinner – I went basic – just a flatbread pizza, but it was tasty. Derek went more upscale – pancetta wrapped mahi mahi on risotto – he said it was delicious. Jim had a pretzel sandwich which he raved about, Sarah had a burger which she said was ok. Derek also went with a flight of IPAs – choose any 4.
After hanging out at the Cask Republic for awhile – we moved onto 116 Crown. We discovered 116 Crown thanks to our friend Lizzie Brook who had her birthday there last year. They have an extensive menu of unique drink concoctions – all different flavor profiles and many are delicious (of course, you have to choose the one that fits your taste). They also serve a ridiculously simple dessert that never fails to please – warm chocolate chip cookies. I ordered a Four Thieves, Derek ordered a Chantme, and all four of us shared the cookies.
We closed off the night by going home and watching Star Wars spoofs.
Derek said it was a great birthday – and isn’t that what matters?
